Two pictures that have gone out this weekend to a couple of guests at the Motor City Comic Con in Detroit. That first one went with my friend in the green jacket to Raphael Sbarge (and I’m still waiting to hear about that, although I think it’s a good bet that he got glomped pretty good because she described him as ‘super nice’, har); the second went to artist Alex Buechel as part of an ongoing joke that started what, four years ago? LOL. [Alex, if you’re reading this, a certain girl we both know says your kid has no chance at all of not growing up nerdy.]

Mass Effect Series Replay Notes - Update 2

2nd Update on my Liara Lovin’ ME series play-through.

Game: ME1

I just wrapped up Feros last night and it wasn’t as painful as I remember—didn’t even die once. I remember Kaidan being less useful as a team member (despite loving him dearly), but he’s been quite sturdy and handy! Maybe I’ve let group-think influence my memory, or maybe I tended to use the aliens more frequently in my squad in past ME1 plays. I’ve also decided to focus his talent build on tech since my other squadie is Liara—so he’s kicking ass with Overload, Neural Shock, and Sabotage (the Geth don’t stand a chance). Between Kaidan’s tech and Liara’s biotics, I’m left to fish the enemy off with my limited stock pistol upgraded with various mods to suit the situation, as well as a well-placed Throw.

Something I’ve learned about the Geth—they really don’t know the meaning of overkill. I’m talking to a Thorian-controlled colonist about the situation on Feros when suddenly he’s struck by a Geth rocket and goes flying. Was a rocket really necessary to take out a one measly little colonist? From behind?

More fun glitches at Zhu’s Hope. My team has dealt with the Geth at the ExoGeni facility and we’re heading back down to Zhu’s Hope. As soon as we get off the elevator Kaidan gets stuck on a corner of the wall. He’s flailing and kind of spinning in place and creeping me out. Nothing I do dislodges him from this spot so I reload my last save (fortunately I save regularly because of problems such as this) and this time I avoid said corner like the plague.

By this point I’ve realized a great benefits of my particular squad—we all wear light armor and primarily use pistols. This leads to budget efficiency in outfitting the team. I upgrade Shep to the latest/greatest and either Kaidan or Liara gets the hand-me-down. I’m not usually strategic this way in building a team in games, but now my eyes have been opened!

Liara Lovin’ is proceeding slowly. After Feros we talked a bit and she made clear that she feels we must stay focused on the mission. More than anything it seems like she’s inexperienced and nervous about melding for the first time. Liara emphasized that when an Asari melds with another, they share a profound connection that is beyond sexual pleasure and can often be life-changing for an Asari. My Shepard takes this seriously and respects Liara’s decision to back off, while still hoping to spend more time with her.

Some random bits:

Kaidan looks cute in Phoenix armor.
There is a lot of loot - inventory is a bitch. Shield Battery III or or Shield Regenerator III?
Mako heals. Good lord, Mako heals! The damn thing take so long to get its shields back.
Ashley really is unpleasant. Even more than I remembered.

Mass Effect Series Replay Notes

I’m starting at ME1 and doing a run-through of the whole series. Will add notes as I play just to kind of keep track and share my game with y’all. This is on Xbox360 as my Vista-saddled laptop couldn’t handle the game. Eventually want to do PC so I can mod etc. Some things I specifically want to do this play-through are pursue the Liara romance, complete all the side missions, nail some missing achievements, and see if there’s anything I missed—it’s been a while since I played ME1!

Here’s how I’m playing this one:

Male Shepard - customized face (Sheploo’s fine, but I have to make a custom every time. Have to.)

Name: John

Pre-service History: Colonist born on Mindoir. Rescued by the Alliance at 16 when slavers raided the colony, killing his family and friends. Joined the alliance a few years later.

Psychological Profile: Sole Survivor

Military Specialization: Adept

Playing as: Paragon

Love Interest: Liara - I’ve never done the Liara loving, but I do like her character (except for the eyebrows). And seeing as it’s the BIG LOVE STORY of the series, I figure it will probably be fun and I want to see what I’ve been missing. If it gets icky I reserve the right to drop her like a hot potato and find comfort in any arms that will hold me.

Squad: Kaidan & Liara (going for the achievements & gotta keep my L2 by my side).

Combat Difficulty: Veteran

I’ve played 13 hours at this point and so far I’ve done the minor Citadel missions, most of the available minor exploration missions, and I’ve saved Liara. I’m about to embark on the Helena Blake missions.

Some things that jump out at me this playthrough - a lot more Thresher Maws than I remember. So far I’ve killed 3!

I forgot about the random glitches, i.e. Helena Blake all of a sudden is levitating 3 feet off the ground—Kaidan, Liara and Shep are all looking up at her like it’s perfectly natural to spontaneously levitate in your Presidium finery.

Mako as annoying as ever. Elevator rides are slooow. Anderson—the poor man is not attractive. Husks come in swarms. Explosive containers are inconveniently placed (right by my foot).

I forgot how lovely and interesting the Asari species is (talking with Liara about Asari culture). That one way they gain understanding of other species is through bonding/mating and creating offspring that carry genetic traits from the alien (non-Asari) parent. Finding it simultaneously touching and slutty that they’ll do it with any species or gender.
